Nepal’s Great Leap Forward
After 10 years of war and misery Nepal emerged from elections in April 2008 with a Maoist majority in the Constituent Assembly and the end of a 239 year-old monarchy. The Maoists, who had waged pitched battles against the Nepali government throughout the Himalayn nation beat out older more established parties including left wing rivals. Many citizens of the impoverished country are hoping that the new government will bring change and prosperity to the long suffering nation. Turnout for the elections was strong and there were only a few instances of violence and irregularities. Many hope that election day losers will not rekindle the tinderbox and reignite simmering feuds between the rival parties.
