Saut d’Eau

by Daniel Cima

Every year on July 16th, thousands of Haitians flock to Saut d’eau (Sodo in Kreyòl). Voodooists, the old, the young, friends helping the sick and mothers carrying their children, walk the dirt roads under extreme heat to reach this magical place. The legend has it that the Virgin Mary appeared in this site. Since then people come to this waterfall to benefit from the healing powers of its waters. Song and music are part of the bathing ritual where pilgrims wash themselves covering their bodies with aromatic basil, dandelions, soaps, and perfumes. In the end this journey brings hope and spiritual uplifting to those who come to Sodo.
