Mt. Pleasant Street
Mt. Pleasant street has as a diverse a history as it does a population. It’s where Helen Hayes shopped and horses raced in the early 1800’s, President Lincoln and his wife took carriage rides in the 1860’s, and the first DC streetcars rolled. Where farmers farmed and government workers escaped the swampy Washington DC summers. Where riots erupted in 1968 after Martin Luther King was assassinated and again in 1991 when a Latino immigrant was beaten by a cop. Where yuppies sip lattes next to Hispanic women selling tamales on the street. Where the rooftops of million-dollar homes can be seen from the window of two-room apartments that house families of 10 or more.
