back-to-square-one: Back to Square One

Mamik (12) and Farzana (8). Mamik didn’t quite remember her father or mother. After her father died, Mamik’s mother remarried but her new husband didn’t want to feed her children as well. Such is the habit in this harsh place. Mamik went to live with her brother and his wife, but then Mamik’s eyes became infected. “They were never treated. There was no money to go to a doctor or to buy eye drops”, she said. When the worst of the afternoon heat subsided, Farzana, Mamik’s friend used to guide her blind friend through the village.
